Ruby – rubies, like sapphires, are a variety of corundum. The ruby distinguishes itself through its well-known red color, and has a toughness index of 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond. Rubies can be found in the United States, in Amity, but the most precious ones are extracted in Myanmar, Thailand and Sri Lanka. The ruby bears several Sanskrit names, some of which indicate its importance as the most precious stone in the Indian subcontinent. Some of the Sanskrit names are ratnaraj (the queen of gemstones), ratnanayaka (the main stone), and padmaraga (red-as-the-lotus), inviting the wearer to both spiritual and social development.
